The doctoral thesis entitled Original Singles in Romanian and French Literature Between 1900-1950 captures the image of modern celibacy, which somehow defies the traditional patterns of the concept, being focused specifically on the vision of indifference manifested only at the social level – not from a perspective that ignores sexual instinct. Along these guidelines, chastity goes beyond the norm and becomes a simple option, so that the initial data of celibacy change significantly, preserving the civil identity of the exponents, recognized from hereafter as unmarried persons. Among the causes reiterated in approaching the bachelor’s status, one can see voluntary determinations, dictated by the will of the exponents, but also independent contexts, inconsistent with the will of the characters, and, at the same time, impossible to avoid.
