The aim of this course is to develop learner confidence and autonomy in using English as the language of communication in professional engineering contexts. The course has been designed to address adults with previous pre-intermediate or intermediate knowledge of English and it aims to develop and refine high-priority language that is necessary in any branch of modern engineering. The topics addressed in the English for Engineering course book include, but are not restricted to: - The engineering profession and field; - Describing technical problems and design issues in various systems; - The use of numbers, dimensions, measurements and conversions, mathematical symbols and geometrical shapes; - Comparing materials or products, properties and capabilities; - Components and assemblies; - Technical innovations etc. Each unit consists of a wide variety of activities aimed to develop reading comprehension, speaking skills through role-plays and situational dialogues, technical vocabulary in synonymous structures, descriptive, creative and technical writing. These activities have been conceived to activate students’ vocabulary and grammar knowledge and develop their ability to use this knowledge for real-life purposes while fulfilling typical engineering tasks. The units in the book include essential grammar tips adapted to students’ needs including verbal tenses, the active/passive distinction, if clauses, -ing forms and infinitives, adjective and adverb comparison etc. Grammar is introduced progressively thus allowing students to develop understanding and facilitating learning. Moreover, the activities by means of which the grammar is taught include warm-up and feedback sections, thus securing students’ involvement in the actual teaching and learning process and ensuring sound acquisition of grammar structures.
