If top-notch fully automatic machine translation is not yet possible, a wide range of computer-aided translation tools can be used to assist human translators in the process of translation, thus helping them to translate faster, better and more efficiently. This would be, in an overall view, the broad definition of computer-aided translation (CAT), the topic of this book, which intends to present the basic concepts of CAT technology as well as practical examples of the main functions of such tools, available for free.

We believe that aspiring translators need a travel plan for their adventure into the computer-aided translation : more precisely, they should know what to expect (i.e., the meaning of CAT), what to pack up in their luggage (i.e., knowledge), what means of transport to choose (i.e., different tools), what are the general rules for their use, what are the pros and cons of such means, their availability, low or no-cost versions.
