The theoretical part of this book deals with the problem of intertextuality and rewriting in the context of universal and comparative literature. In the plea for the full integration of the intertextual method in the “table of contents” of universal and comparative literature, a picture of the current development of the two fields was first sketched, after which the arguments for the desired methodological connection were stated, with reference to comparative studies that already incorporate the theory of intertextuality. The transgression of borders (or the proof that they are, in fact, artificial) is peculiar to comparativism, but also to intertextuality as a method: whether it is the area of demarcation between national literatures or between texts/discourses.
