The centrality of Christ in the theology of Father Dumitru Staniloae

Father Dumitru Stăniloae is the theologian who was able to assert himself as a leading figure in the international and Romanian Orthodox theology. His name is closely connected with the renewal of Romanian Orthodox theology, as the man who managed to bring a philokalic and spiritual guidance, rooted in the theology of the Holy Fathers. The increased interest for his works, manifested by developing his theological thought in current theological studies by doctoral theses that investigate some aspects of his work, the translations of Father Stăniloae’s works which helped spread his theological approach of foreign theologians, all these are reasons to justify the approach that we undertook in this study on the centrality of Christ in the theology of Father Stăniloae.

Father Dumitru Stăniloae is the creator of the original theological synthesis which brought in present the theology of the Holy Fathers, by the translations of their fundamental works into Romanian language and by the valorification of their theological thinking in his numerous studies that he has published. I have explained that in the center of his theological thought is Jesus Christ, the divine incarnated Logos, Christ is the beginning, the middle and the end of the entire creation. Christ Himself realised the supreme union between God and man, in Him and through Him the creation acquires unity and consistency, enters into direct relationship with God. The creation finds its beginnings in Christ and everything is ontologically restored and finds its purpose. For Father Dumitru Stăniloae, Christ, the incarnated Son of God, is the central point toward whom all converge and where the entire creation finds its origin and its meaning. The centrality of Christ is emphasized at his theological syntheses because in Christ everything is fundamented on His theandric synthesis. In Christ the union between God and man is fully accomplished, and also in Christ mankind is granted with the possibility of union with God by the uncreated divine energies. Any attempt to base human connection between man and God without Christ will fail in a philosophical discourse without purpose. The centrality of Christ does not mean, for Father Staniloae, the repealing of the Trinitarian foundation, because Christ is seen in the unity of the Person of the incarnated Logos, as God and Man at the same time.

The centrality of Christ in the theology of Father Dumitru Stăniloae has a distinguished importance for the Church's mission in the world and in the contemporary society, particularly regarding the dialogue between religion and science, interpersonal dialogue based on a proper understanding of natural revelation in the light of supernatural revelation, because of the divine Logos present distinctly and differently, but in both unitary. Giving up the secular culture, as a result of separating the natural order from and the supernatural order, is possible only in Christ, the incarnated Son of God in whom the uncreated and the created, the transcendence and the immanence meet in an undivided and inseparable way, in an unmixed and an unchanged way.
